Bluefield Solar has acquired the development rights for its first standalone battery energy storage system (BESS).
The acquisition represents development rights, grid connection costs and the leasehold of land of the 20MW ready-to-build project for around £1.5 million from Shaw-Energi Ltd.
Based in Liverpool, construction of the project is expected to begin this year.
It is Bluefield’s second BESS project, having acquired a 45MWp solar and 25MWp storage site in northeast Lincolnshire in August 2021. It follows the broadening of Bluefield’s mandate in 2020, allowing it to invest in technologies other than solar PV.
“Energy storage has enormous growth potential in the UK and offers an exceptionally attractive additional revenue stream, diversifying the company’s income from our majority solar portfolio with its predictable regulated revenue profile,” said John Rennocks, chairman of Bluefield Solar.
The company recently acquried a 47.5MW renewables portfolio from Good Energy, while in December Bluefield Partners expanded into the French market through a framework agreement with IDSUD Energies that is aiming to deliver 25MWp of rooftop projects every year for five years in France.
